Ancient History of Mar Saba Monastery
Mar Saba Monastery, also known as the Monastery of Saint Sabbas, was founded in the year 483 AD by Saint Sabas, a Cappadocian monk who settled in the Judean Desert near Bethlehem. Built dramatically into the cliffs of the Kidron Valley, the monastery quickly became an important center of early Christian monasticism.
Over the centuries, Mar Saba attracted thousands of monks from across the Byzantine world and played a major role in preserving Greek and Syriac religious manuscripts, theology, and traditions. Despite invasions, political changes, and periods of decline, the monastery has remained continuously inhabited for more than 1,500 years, making it one of the oldest active monasteries in the world and a powerful symbol of spiritual endurance in the region.
