Get to Know Lillian from the USA: Her Experience with Human Rights Internship in the West Bank

My name is Lillian, and I come from the United States. ⁢Currently, I am‍ a third-year student at Pennsylvania State University, enrolled in a unique dual-degree program that combines a Bachelor’s‌ degree in International Politics with a Master’s degree in International Affairs. My area of specialization⁣ is focused on Middle‍ Eastern‌ Politics.

During my time at the Palestinian Center for‍ Education and Cultural Exchange, I had the opportunity to participate ⁣in the Human Rights Internship ‌program. Each morning, we gathered for a delicious breakfast at the center, providing a perfect opportunity to connect with fellow participants from different programs and schedules. Following breakfast,⁤ we⁢ embarked on visits to various organizations related to human rights, such ⁤as the Independent Commission on ‍Human Rights, and⁢ engaged with local ‍families to gain insights into the daily lives of Palestinians living near Israeli settlements and the treatment of Palestinian prisoners.

After our morning activities, we returned to the center to teach English to Palestinian students for approximately⁤ two hours. The students were ‌enthusiastic about practicing English with⁣ a native speaker and learning about different cultures. Subsequently, all international participants shared lunch together, exploring the diverse culinary options available on Ain Sara‍ Street.

In the afternoon,‌ I attended Arabic classes with my exceptional teacher, Nadine, who tailored our lessons⁢ to align ‌with my interests and ‍objectives. Additionally, ⁢we often embarked on day trips, such as visiting Bethlehem and the Al ⁣Aroub refugee camp, to further immerse ⁣ourselves in the local ⁣culture⁤ and community.

Despite the negative portrayals of the West Bank⁢ in the media, I have always felt safe and welcomed in Hebron. The hospitality of the people here is ‍remarkable, with ‌numerous invitations for coffee or tea extended after brief encounters. Everyone has⁣ a unique story to ‍share and is eager to practice⁣ English while learning about your perspectives on Hebron. I ‌look forward to the possibility of returning‌ in⁢ the future⁤ to continue this enriching experience.

For those interested in exploring similar opportunities, I highly recommend considering the⁢ Law & Human ⁣Rights Internship offered by the Palestinian Center for Education and ⁢Cultural ⁤Exchange. Click HERE to learn more about this impactful program!
